“The formidable historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson once described Bishop Tanner’s home [2908 W. Diamond St.] as ‘the center of the African American intellectual community of Philadelphia and the Northeast United States.’
The Friends of the Tanner House sits on the precipice of a momentous historic moment. They have valiantly awakened our knowledge of the material culture of North Philadelphia in the restoration of the home of the Tanner Family...I view the Friends of the Tanner House as a beacon to further the ancestors' work.”
—Dr. Rae Alexander-Minter, daughter of Sadie Tanner Mossell & Raymond Pace Alexander. (July 2024)

We heard y’all loud and clear. Our #SaveTheTannerHouse shirts are back and here to stay. This time around, we’re so happy to work with the local and magnificent Philadelphia Printworks to deliver higher quality tees in a wider variety of sizes. We’ve added a new special note to the back, repping our evolving vision for the Friends of the Tanner House. The color combination is informed by Henry Ossawa Tanner’s “The Annunciation” which remains on display at the local Philadelphia Museum of Art. DONATE NOW to support the urgent stabilization of the Henry O. Tanner House, a National Historic Landmark located in North Central Philadelphia
Thank you to all of our donors!
Thank you to all of our donors!
The Friends of the Tanner House have currently received commitments of more than $250K between individual donors and institutional pledges to ensure that the Henry O. Tanner House received a new exterior roof, closing up the home from exposure to the elements which had accelerated deterioration. This urgent, emergency effort allowed us to begin and extend into the process of recovering the interior of the home with attention to best practices in historic home preservation. We are far from finished, but this is such a strong beginning so that the Tanner House survives for a brighter tomorrow!
SAVE THE TANNER HOUSE
We are currently raising funds that are 100% dedicated to the stabilization of the Henry O. Tanner House, a National Historic Landmark located in North Central Philadelphia. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Friends of the Tanner House, ensuring that all donations made to the campaign are tax-deductible. Donations made via check can be mailed to: 1608 Walnut Street, Suite 1702, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Please explicitly name "Tanner House Campaign" within the memo.
With the current owner’s enthusiasm, plans have been secured to transfer the property to non-profit ownership after clearing title for its long-term stewardship and reuse as a community cultural asset.
With your contribution, we can secure its future for generations of Philadelphia artists, intellectuals, changemakers, tourists, and visitors.
